My summer 2007 schedule was crazy hectic, filled with gigs and gatherings all over Western North America. The event which was the finale was the Symbiosis Gathering in California in September, and this mix reflects a portion of the Sons of Aurora set I played with my partner Norris. The gathering was one of the highlights of my summer and these particular tracks are for me a portal back to that amazing weekend up in the mountains East of San Francisco. The fact that they are all off of the same three labels goes to show that I am a big fan of what Flow, Blue Tunes and Iboga records are up to these days.

Downtempo in the park

I would like to welcome everyone down to the park on 17th ave and 8th St. SW, Calgary (i think it's Tompkins park?) this sunday August 26. My friend Bridget runs a market in that park every sunday and this sunday we are going to be having some downtempo beats provided by myself (Kyal Stargazer), with Adam Geosphere and later on moving into a bit more upbeat music with Jay and one other guest TBA. We will be in the Gazebo starting around noon and hoping to go to about 6 or 7pm. Hope to see some friendly faces out there, come hang out for the afternoon, bring daytime toys, Love, and a smile.

Sorry about the multiple postings, for some reason my previous two attempts ended up with empty postings. Grrr..... so now I am doing them one by one. =)

Norris and I had a blast at Motion Notion (Alberta, Canada) this year, the promoter James really out did himself and the weather was INTENSE but made for big adventures for sure.

We are now excited for our dub/glitch set at Shambhala (British Columbia, Canada) on the Beach stage on Saturday, and of course taking part in the Green Moon (Green Sector & Moon Tribe, hello turbo sound rig!!) camp at Burning Man (Nevada, USA) this August... now that's going to be one hot (+50 Celsius, zero humidity is the forecast) and dusty week in the desert. We will be wrapping up our summer festival season this year by playing at the Symbiosis gathering (California, USA) at the end of September so we are feeling very lucky for having so many incredible opportunities to play some tunes for folks.

We are VERY happy with how our set came together for this years Motion Notion festival, so we decided to record it afterwards here at home and post it up for others to enjoy. This year we were wedged between two full-on psy performers, with Wizzy Noise being the act to follow us, so our set was meant to be a roller coaster through driving minimal tech, progressive and full-on psy. Add to that the fact that our set started out with hot dry sky's filled with stars and ended during a MASSIVE rain/thunder storm with tornado warnings for the area in effect... talk about INTENSE!!!! In the end our laptop finally stopped working and our fear was that it had actually shorted out due to the rain but the next day it started up without a hitch which was a HUGE relief. Our goal was to keep everyone engaged, twist a few noodles and not burn people out on the full-on. From all the super-positive feedback I think we managed to kick some ass!! Many of the tracks are killer classics, with a few shinny new ones thrown in, and the overall flow is a bit of a journey so sit back and imagine the thunder clouds closing in from behind, and as the mix ends the rain is coming down with a vengeance and the clouds are swirling with the threat of tornadoes. They don't call us Sons of Aurora for nothing....

Psy-crisis support/volunteer opportunity at MoNo

Hey kids - for those of you who may be attending Motion Notion (July 12-15 close to Drayton Valley), we will be running a sanctuary/psy-crisis safe space called aPSYlum. If anyone is interested in doing psy-crisis volunteer work, we could probably use a couple more volunteers. For a 4-hour shift, you would get a partial reimbursement of your ticket cost. Anyone interested in poi classes?!?!

Hey Calgary!

I'm just passing through for a few days (I'll be leaving sometime between wednesday and friday) and I thought I'd put on some classes if people were interested. I can show you and help you open doors to: drills for improving control and grace, families of tricks and moves, a variety of styles, deeper and more fluid expression, and a structure to help you understand poi at deeper levels.

I like to work with intermidate and advanced poi, but I can help anyone at any level create a foundation of understanding for this beautiful art form. This is all very last minute, so I don't have a space or a solid time in mind, maybe starting tuesday afternoon or evening? It all depends on the response. If anyone knows of a nice indoor space, I would love to play inside, but outside would be great too. The class/classes will be by donation and barter, so give whatever you feel is appropriate. I've never taught a formal "class" before, but I do have a wealth of knowledge, experience and dedication. I've done a weekend intensive workshop with Nick Woolsey, I've been to two fire spinning gatherings with over a 100 performers at each (FireDrums and Wild Fire) and I spun with the Pyronauts (an internation all-star fire spinning collective) in the fire conclave at Burning Man. Through those experience I was able to spin with some of the most established flow artists in the world. I picked up what I could and through the process of my development created my own style and understanding of poi. I feel blessed to have had those experiences and be able pick up two socks and have so much fun with them, just flinging them around.

Description:

This is the live recording of our set at the Shambhala music festival this year in British Columbia, Canada. Its a mash up of psydub, ethno fusion, psydm, idm, prog psy and just a lot of great music. This was an honor to play and an even bigger honor to have so many amazing souls present and having the chance to open the stage for Ott, Andrew of Interchill and Sphongle (Awoooo!!) had us smiling pretty big for quite a few days afterwards. A huge thank you to all those who were there with a gigantic thank you to miss Saratonin for being our vocalist through this set. Congrats Sara! Oh and the most important shout out of all...to Lion-s and Hoola Hoop for having us!!

Very deep, dark and diiirty.....

Exactly as my girl Irena ordered, each track and transition approved by her, this mix is deep, dark, dirty and very progressive. This mix was also VERY hard to compile, taking over 80 hours and four months. Compiling a cd with another person did make the process a long one, but it was also something we both really enjoyed. As well, this version is an edited master, my mixer is on the fritz and once I get it repaired a new unedited final mix will be posted.

observed at Deepen, his long running (7+years) Saturday weekly at the Lotus Sound Lounge. On any given Saturday you'll find most of the city's heads in attendance, listening to Vernon put the dancefloor through a well-deserved workout. Missing some crazy hats - please help!

hey kids...
i have a large crazy hat collection, some of you may have seen them around or even worn them as part of the Calgary Mad Hatters Society...sadly, unfortunately, at the present moment, i cannot find the damned things. the last time i remember even having some of them was at Pesadilla back a couple of months ago. they usually travel around in a large black garbage bag.
if anyone has seen of them or knows someone who may have them, pleeez let me know.

some of them look like:
-a big blue mad hatters hat
-silver and black medieval hat with a mask
-zebra striped mad hatters/pimp type hat
-gold genie harem hat/turban

new phat conductor tunes...

Just thought I'd drop a line to let you know what I've been working on lately...

Been spending most of my time working with my new band The Department of Motion. We are a 4 piece from Toronto consisting of myself on beats, bass, composition, production, etc.. Clara on vocals, Iain on guitars and bass, and the illustrious Stu doing the recording engineering. We should be ready to start doing live shows by the summer.

The first one I made for my girlfriend nunich for christmas (hence the covert living room samplings) the little short one is just getting started (to give you an idea what the process is like) it didn't have vocals or instrumental parts at that time. Then there's an as-yet-unnamed dubby tune, and this 15/8 time signature thing I did for Iain for Bravo (a canadian arts network) there's a video in the works. I can't wait.

I've been doing lots of breaks stuff lately too. I'll post about release dates when they are a bit closer. Most of this stuff is fr summer.

For me, a track has to have a sparkle in it somewhere. I really enjoy warmer, twisted, acidy stuff for the earlier stages of the night but when its time to get things going I'm all about tracks that have nice thick percussion and a touch of funk, but that are still a bit alien and pumping", says Luke.

Earthdance, the global festival for peace, and the world's largest simultaneous dance event, will take place on Saturday, Sept 17th 2005. Join Shake it here in Calgary to raise funds for CBCA's Anti-Homophobia campaign and for victims of Hurricainne Katrina. We intend to deliver a tight and warm event, with excellent local music and art. Proceeds will go to CBCA as well as Lonestar Camp, a youth camp outside of Dallas, Texas that is run by the City Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The camp is providing housing, food, clothing, and support to those displaced by the Hurricaine Katrina.

Hey all

I'm just wondering if this tribe is mostly Calgary based, or if there's peeps from Edmonton and the rest of Alberta (I'm really curious if there's any from Lethbridge, if so give DJ's Spyne and Pez a "heads up" from Darryl).

I'm originally a Claresholm kid, I helped throw a party there with the kids from the old "House of Slack" a few years back (it was my first party, I hadn't heard a DJ until two weeks after I'd agreed to throw the party, GI Jody spinning some acid techno at Gotham). 'Oasis' was my first outdoor party, and 'Chakra' was my first heavy dose of psy-trance.

I was part of the tiny scene in Lethbridge until I moved to the coast a few years ago. I'm wondering if anyone knows if the scene is still alive in the southern reaches (it was struggling when I left, we'd had trouble getting venues after the Edmonton incident with the strobe lights at a show dropping a couple of kids, and the press declaiming 'E causes seizures', f*cking media).

I've also been talking with a few friends out here about possibly getting a bus and trying to organize a travelling psy-trance party, doing a run from the coast, through the prairies and in to Eastern Canada. I like the idea of running some guerilla parties through some of the rural centres, bring in a few kids from the nearest community large enough to have a sustainable scene, maybe show some kids what's happening outside of their towns. Maybe let a couple people know that there's more to 'partying' than booze and harder drugs (I've heard a lot of reports that meth, etc is on the rise in most smaller communities. I never want to live in small town Alberta again, but that doesn't mean I don't care).

am i the only one that feels...

that electronic parties in this neck of the woods are starting to get awfully bogged down by officers of the law?

i went to Planet of the Drums in Edmonton; I'm having a seriously hard time enjoying myself at parties with six cops, hands on guns, breathing down my neck. On Canada day, one intersection on Whyte ave had ten police officers at the ready.
It's pretty bad in general, but the rave scene is taking a real kicking! is it the same in calgary? is this justified? should we be bothered by the law if we aren't doing anything wrong? why is it that electronic parties require three times the security that metal shows do?

Have drum and must play! Edmonton

HeyYa ... did a conga workshop at Capoeira Edmonton this past Saturday and the next day, coincidentally, the guys who gave the workshop were at Black Dog playing with Bomba ... it all reminded me how much I need need need to drum.

I'm very lo-tech ATM (read: divorce, failed business, two broken feet, moved across the country, yada-blah) but I just got a new 12" Remo, so ...

I guess my point is that we need more events like the 24 hour drum circle in *cough* Calgary. (Maybe I'll just start RainbowFamily potlucks!) For my money it's about involving folk rather than evolving stars.

A question for the dj's, and everyone else too....

I think it is super important to support anyone who is willing to take up djing as a hobby/passion, and I have really enjoyed being able to include others in events I have been a part of in the past. ONe of the best parts oabout the Calgary community is how inclusive it is to new dj's.

My question is this: When is a dj ready to play out?

I think that it is important for our community to be able to give each other honest feedback and yet be as suportive as possible, and this can be a tricky thing.

I know full well how stressful it can be to make the transition from the bedroom/house party to a larger system in a more public setting, and I by no means wish to champion an elitist/exclusionary attitude.

When Norris and I started to practice at home, it was about a year later after nearly 20-30 hours a week of practice before we played our first house party at Petronellas. We made a pact that we would not rush playing out because we did not think it would be fair to our friends to hack away at their expense. We may have been a little extreme though, and I realise that fer sure.

As a dancer, how do you feel about new dj's at peak time time slots? How many trainwrecks is too many? Do you think it can be hard for a dj who has a few really rough beginning sets to pull out of a reputation for playing poorly? Are you willing to support a dj go through "learning pains" publicly? Is it fair as a community to be overly critical of a new dj?

And to the new dj's: Are you more concerned with being in front of a crowd than you are about if you have the ability to present an enjoyable set to those listening? Do you feel that going public quickly helps you learn faster? Are you able to handle honest feedback? Do you ask for honest critical feedback?

Well there ya go, I have tried to present this in an objective manner so please don't anyone take this as anything other than a genuine interest in how others feel about his.

The Phat Conductor LIVE Tour 2005

2005 Marks an important transition in my musical development, reaching out to grasp previously unimagined possibilities. This summer I am touring with my new live PA/turntablism set using the revolutionary new software Ableton Live. Ableton allows me to create a live megamix of all of his original material in the party rocking sampladelic style I am known for. Unlike many previous Live PA rigs Ableton allows for great flexibility, improvisation, live looping and remixing, making each set a truly unique experience.

I am now booking tour dates for a very reasonable price. In addition to the Live set you will receive online promotional support, media packs/design elements, a DVD of visuals to accompany the set, a CD quality recording of the event, audio CD giveaways, some of my original artwork in the form of posters to give away to your party guests, and .pdfs of wall sized black and white murals which are designed to be printable from a home computer printer. This package ensures that the event will be thematically unified and long remembered because of the original artwork and music that you can give to your patrons.

If you are interested in booking me for this tour send me an email with an offer on one of the open dates and we will work something out. I am very understanding of your needs as I am a promoter myself. If my rates are too high I have other options available. I make most of my money from teaching digital music production and engineering. I charge $30 Canadian an hour and bring tons of samples and producer goodies to get any setup up and running. If you know any budding producers, or want to get your name on a breaks record hire me for a session or two and I will drop your event fees dramatically.

If you are in the UK/Europe and are worried about costs I will play your event for free so provided that you cover travel expenses and we find a few other gigs close by to make it workable.

Hey, I am thinkig that the Calgary community is in a bt of a flux at thsi time, and I was wondering if anyone else ahs any thoghts as to how tings are right now and where they might be going.

Do people feel energy on the rise or are things going stale?

I know that it was pretty cool seeing the old Rave HAad site back up, and looking through it made me remeber the years past and brought about a realisation of the substantial changes in myself with regards to electronica and it's culture here in Calgary.

Dear Friends,

We would like to invite you to come and dance all night during the shortest day of the year, Saturday Dec 18, 2004, in celebration of the return of the “God of the Sun.”
We are a new production crew and have a pretty cool venue located downtown. Public transportation will be nearby as well. This is a private party and admission will be by donation. The party will be not for profit - we a throwing this for the love of friends and cool music. We do hope to collect enough money to cover our operating costs (i.e. sound equipment costs, lighting…etc.) and any extra proceeds will be donated to the very worthwhile “venue.” Our line-up is going to look something like this:

10:00-!2:00 Dj Clean breaks/house/drum and bass (Calgary)
12:00-2:00 Dj Scryman psytrance (Calgary)
2:00-4:00 Wendyj psytrance (LA)
4:00-6:00 Dj Gunther psy/progressive/trance (Calgary)

In addition there will be a downtempo area featuring ambient music by Laz.

If you are interested in attending the winter solstice party we would ask a few simple favours:

-please sign-up in advance at mistayaproductions@shaw.ca tickets will also be available (more details later). Capacity is limited to 100.
-do not show up with friends who are not on the list – they will not be permitted!!
-please be non-destructive towards the venue as it has some unique history behind it, and we would like to be able to throw parties there in the future.
-please be quiet and inconspicuous in the neighborhood. The venue itself contains the sound very well but we don’t want the party stopped due to noisy people in the neighborhood. There will also be no parking directly at the venue but there is ample parking around the venue – better yet carpool!
-please be harm-free towards others, remember this is party for the love of friends and music.
-please do not post this information on any public sites - this is a private party. Feel free however, to pass this on to whomever you think would be a good addition to the party.
-NO ALCHOHOL – we don’t have a license.

So the next Arena party is Friday, December 17. We are doing something a little different this month, that being an ElectroClash Dance Party!! When I was out in Vancouver a few months ago, I went to this club called the Lotus Sound Lounge and the deejay there was playing some really great electro. I chatted him up, one thing lead to another, and now he is coming to Calgary to play a set for us!! He gave me a CD and it is excellent. If you would like a copy, please email me and I will burn one for you. James will be backed up by Chris B and I, and we will be throwing down the electro sounds all night long. However, if you need that house fix, Isis Graham and Dylan Leroy will be tag-teaming it upstairs. Mike Zajko will also be playing an opening set of breaks, downtempo, and dub. some of you maybe familar with this work. some of you may have seen us drop
the idea on the back of the upcomming together flyer.

We believe that given that the upcomming event is on private land we have a
chance to work on creating
a temporary autonomous zone. I do not have much to say my self. I would
really like encourage everyone to read the essay that you can find on the
page linked below. There are Three essays that you can read that were
written by hakim bey. But the one called TAZ is the one that i think that
we should all read first. but that is just me.

When we gather we have a chance to make big moves interms of change for the
world
and we think that inorder to do that we need to be armed with as much
knowlage as possible.
and to start a dilogue before we meet.

Tyler 'T-Bone' Stadius - Friday, November 19th

November 19th, Arena Niteclub will see another installment of the monthly event known as Shake It. This month, I am very pleased to announce that Canada's Busiest DJ, Tyler Stadius, will be joining us for a night of true house music. If you haven't heard of this guy, then ask around and you will hear nothing but great things about him.

Tyler's love of music began in the late 70's - early 80's while he and his family lived and travelled around the world. Because his father was a disco, funk & soul diehard, Tyler was always surrounded by a variety of musical styles.

In Toronto, Canada, Tyler spent the latter part of the 80's stage-diving and frontlining as lead singer in various punk bands. In 1989, while attending film school, Tyler hosted numerous warehouse parties in the downtown core. Not happy with what the DJ's were playing, he decided to provide the music himself, playing a mix of reggae, funk, hip hop, acid jazz & house.

In 1991, Tyler moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. The underground music scene consisted of pop techno and early rave. Tyler was one of the first DJ's to introduce house music to Vancouver, spinning at all the warehouse parties and raves. In 1992, Tyler started "Romper Room", his first residency. This club was the only place to hear proper house by artists like: Murk, Todd Terry, Kerri Chandler, and Masters at Work. Tyler was quickly recognized as Vancouver's top house DJ.

Tbone's mixed tapes and cd's have received outstanding reviews by respected publications such as, Muzik, DJ, Mixer, URB, XLR8R, & iD. It wasn't long before word spread and Tyler was playing at some of the best clubnights in the world: The Shelter & Red Dog in Chicago, DIY / Bounce, Back to Basics, The Rex in Paris, Space at Bar Rhumba, Tribal Function, Radius, Wiggle, and Fabric.

Over the years Tyler has brought to town, and played along side many of the world's top DJ's such as Doc
Martin, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Murk, Little 'Louie' Vega, Deep Dish, Ritchie Hawtin, Derrick May, Global Communications, Kenny Hawkes, Terry Francis, Pure Science, Evil Eddie Richards, to name a few.

In 1994, Tyler and a partner, opened "Bassix" in Vancouver, soon recognized as one of the best record shops in Canada.

Alright Kidz... I hope that you are as excited as I am for the next show. It is my 23rd birthday weekend and I would be honored if you would come and celebrate with me. This is going to be our biggest show so far down at the Arena. Here's what we have lined up:

JON DELERIOUS - Fresh off the release of his new single "New Jack Hustlin" out on Fifth Sun Recordings, Jon is going to blow you away with his blend of rythmic, hypnotic, bass driven house music. He will be playing alot of his own stuff as well as many upcoming releases by other big names in the underground house scene. You can expect to lose yourself during his set and then find yourself all over again. You don't want to miss this.

JOSEPH MARTIN - Joe is a good friend of mine from Kelowna, BC, and he will be in town to play Society Thursdays at Manhattans with Tyler C, Guy Smiley, & Noda. After blowing everyone away at Shambhala this year, the boyz thought it would be a good idea to have him blow everyone away here at Manattans. Once he finishes doing that, he is going to come down to Arena the next night to play us some funky house, italodisco, and electroclash.

GEOFFREY PYE - I just got back from Vancouver and I am super stoked to play my new records. I found some sweet classics at the used stores as well as some hot new forward thinking tracks that I picked up at Vancouver's hottest new store Active Pass. I can't wait for you to hear them.

theTeknoCollective's 5th annual gathering Calgary Ab Canada

This callout is for theTeknoCollective's Annual Gathering Together. This will be a very small retreat to a Ranch just one hour outside of Calgary Alberta.

What's involved with this retreat is a 2 night and 3 day escape.

2 nights of dancing and celebration; Friday night being a retreater only party in the most amazing space we've ever housed a dance party in and then on Saturday more people from the larger family will join us for the official Together Gathering in the same space, coming in by Shuttle or car.

Included with your participation is all your meals from Friday evening to Sunday morning, that's 3 meals on Saturday including a evening snack.

Accomodations are comfortable bunks seperate from the rest of the structures, giving people quiet space for sleep and relaxation.
You'll have to bring your own sleepingbag or blanket with a pillow.
There's space for families and thier kids as well.

The ranch also has a beautiful amphitheatre with a bonfire, and a dinning hall for all your meals; all the buildings are within close walking distance of one another.

During the day on Saturday there will be Workshops of various natures for all retreaters to participate in.

There is very limited space for the retreat at this point and it is a first come first serve situation.

©¯flotsam©˜ implies a piece of wreckage found floating on the ocean, or in cyberspace. The microcosm of one tiny human clinging to one tiny piece of flotsam forms the framework for this post-modern performance installation by avant-garde improvisers and collaborators Gerry Morita and Izumi Kuribayashi.

10x DJs - Calgary's artist-run galleries have served as the venue for a series of music-oriented events that we have generically referred to as "10x", because we're electronic at heart and have a hard time with titles that mean something (or look like they might). With the series we have tried to merge Calgary's various music communities, simply hoping that nobody would get hurt in the process. So far we have held three without a lost time injury and we're pretty confident that we've done a decent job of treading the "is it art" line with our unusually robust liquor receipts for an art gallery. On September 2nd, the 10x instigators bring you some club music... broken.

©¯flotsam©˜ is a performance for one dancer (Gerry Morita), one musician (Izumi Kuribayashi), and projected video on a set/costume constructed of plastic sheeting. It is 30 minutes in length, and it is set in a white-walled gallery setting with no fixed audience seating.

With soundscape and electric violin, Izumi Kuribayashi weaves her magical talent with the sinuous animalistic motions and intricate gestures of dancer Gerry Morita. Video images by Jeremy Rittwage deepen the experience by highlighting natural forms that reflect the large plastic, its shapes and
motions.

you know how we all have to work to feel okay?you know when beauty seems to make it okay? you know how much you love yourself? you know how much you love to make people happy? you know that feeling when someone you love realizes how much you love them? you know that feeling when you appreciate your self? your art? you know when youre proud of yourself because you are talented and beautiful?

then show it.
this is my challenge to all of you: lets start a gallery. all over the city of calgary. a street art gallery. if you love someone, go paint it on as many walls as you can so they will see it on their way to work, school, or whatever. found a picture that offers hope, insight, or inspires you? make it into a stencil and paint it up. thought of or want to repeat an inspirational slogan, picture, or text, screen print it on to a poster and wheat paste it. or mount it and cement it to a wall. want to share something that has made your life easier or better, tell us. on the streets.

want to get together with other awesome kids and teach them something about street art, or want to learn how to silk screen, wheat paste, stencil, spray paint, mount, whatever, let me know, i'd be more than happy to facilitate workshops. actually, i need this to survive. or better yet, start your own workshops and invite me. maybe have the work shop late at night, and go out as a team together after.

so i propose that by may 1st stage one of our gallery is complete. meaning, we have our art up. as much art as we can put up, as much love as we can show. may 1st we re-evaluate. decide what strategies worked best. decide where to go from there.

if there is one thing i have learnt is that you have to show appreciation, respect, and love. i dont beleive in regretting, but if i regret anything in my life its not fully expressing how impressed i am be people. if there is one thing that has gotten me through, is knowing that i am loved.

cliche but true: this is our city, these are our streets.

i know you have it in you.
